Kitui is likely to experience a banana shortage after traders threatened not to deliver the commodity to the town. The traders said high cess charged. The traders, who source bananas from Kirinyanga, Murang’a, Meru, Embu and other areas around Mount Kenya, said it had become untenable to sell bananas in Kitui. Yesterday, about 60 affected traders who supply the commodity to the town suspended their operations at the Kitui town’s Kalundu market and protested on the streets. They said the fee levied by Kitui County Government is exploitative and unreasonable. Carrying green tree branches the businesspeople moved in a convoy of Lorries loaded with fresh Bananas, to the Kitui County Commissioner’s office where they sought audience with him.
