Kiwi cyclist earns respect in world championship omnium Hawkes Bay rider Regan Gough produced a huge second day to climb to fifth placing overall in the men’s omnium at the UCI Juniors Track Cycling World Championships in Scotland today. Tenth after the first three events yesterday, Gough was competitive today finishing fourth on points of the 31 riders for the second day at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. He finished fourth in the individual pursuit in 3:28.475 to move up to seventh, third in the scratch race to climb to sixth and eighth in the 1000m time trial for his final fifth placing. “I had a big personal best in the flying lap on the first day and then just had a terrible points race. I was a few metres off big points on one sprint and was caught 10 metres from the line in another,” Gough said. “If I had scored top points in both of these then it would have been a different story. “I had no chance of a medal after yesterday. Our coach Ross Machejefski sat me down after it and we re-focussed. I guess there was a bit of anger there today because I had to prove to everyone that I should be there and I should be competitive. “I am really pleased with today. I gave it absolutely everything. I was really strong today so that is something I guess. But for that awful points race I would have been contesting for a medal.” However Gough has no time to reflect, as he returns to the track with Liam Aitcheson for the spectacular Madison on the final day tomorrow. “I am looking forward to it. It’s great to be riding with Liam. He is experienced in these. It will only be my second Madison so I will be doing as I’m told.” Sprinter Jeremy Presbury has a shot at the podium when he races in the semifinal of the sprint competition tomorrow. The Invercargill rider, who turned 18 at the start of the championships, qualified 11th fastest in 10.641 seconds before beating the Belarusian Artsiom Zaitsau in the first round and second qualifier Maximilian Dornback (Germany) in the second round. He impressed with two tight finishes to beat off Russia’s Alekzey Lysenko in two straight riders in the quarterfinals and takes on another Russian Vladislav Fedin in the best of three semifinal. Teammate Zac Williams (Auckland), who qualified eighth fastest in 10.665, also impressed with an opening round win over Colombia’s Juan Gutierrez and Germany’s Jan May in the second round. He forced Lithuania’s Svajunas Jonauskas to a deciding third ride in the quarterfinals but could not roll over the top of his opponent on the line. Earlier Blenheim’s Callum Saunders, who qualified 20th, lost out in the first round to May. The championships conclude tomorrow.
