Knifeman robs two Shrewsbury bookies in £1,000 raids A 26-year-old man has admitted taking more than £1,000 in two raids on bookmakers in Shrewsbury earlier this month. Nicholas Besim robbed the William Hill bookmakers in Abbey Foregate on June 9, taking £230. During the incident two cashiers were threatened with a knife before the raider grabbed money from the till and ran off down Horsefair towards Abbey Lawns. Police said there had been several customers in the bookmakers at the time of the raid. Five days later Besim, from the Wirral, Merseyside, robbed the Corbett Bookmakers in Castle Foregate, making off with £819. He was arrested by police just 16 minutes later as he got into a taxi. Money believed to be from the robbery was recovered at the scene. Besim appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday and admitted two charges of robbery. He also admitted being in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a knife, and asked for a further five offences to be taken into consideration. Besim was remanded in custody and the case adjourned to July 15 for a pre-sentence report. Superintendent James Tozer, the Shropshire police commander, said: “Thanks to the swift reporting by the public and an excellent description of the suspect, which was circulated to all officers in the vicinity, we were able to make a quick arrest.” Last week, a second man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the William Hill robbery and released on police bail pending further inquiries
