Knocking on doors, I meet the most amazing people. Yesterday, I met a woman who agreed that every Oregonian needs a Fair Shot. She is working hard and playing by the rules, but just cant seem to get ahead. After working for her employer for years at just above the minimum wage, she came down with a severe illness- but kept working because she couldnt afford the time off. Exhausted and sick, she fainted and broke one of her limbs in the process. She was hospitalized for five days, and immediately informed her employer upon admission. Her employer refused to excuse her absence even though she was hospitalized, and as a result she couldnt apply her earned vacation time to her absence. That meant her days in the hospital were unpaid making it even harder for her to imagine how she will get out from underneath her hospital bills. She knows she was treated unfairly, but is afraid she will be fired if she complains about the violation of policy. She simply cant afford that. Im running for the State Senate to help hard working Oregonians like this one who get up every day, go to work, and follow the rules. They arent asking for anything more than a Fair Shot to get ahead. I think everyone deserves a Fair Shot.
