Knocking on doors today made me wish I had another 3 months in this race. Except for some extreme thinkers, most people just want to be happy and heard. Two houses were marked as Republican households. We went anyway. The first guy, an artist, interrupted me to ask, What do you think about Common Core? I laughed, paused, and acknowledged that CC is a tough issue - even for some of my closest friends who are parents - and could use some tweaks (I dont think anyone will disagree with me on this one). By the end, although his wife was frustrated trying to learn a new Math system, I had their votes. At the second Republican house, I was again interrupted during my spiel and asked about another very specific question. I gave my stance, and then had the gift of sitting back and listening to a mom tell me her world views and concerns, as a young, single mom. PEOPLE WANT TO BE HEARD. Nobody will get everything they want 100% of the time. We learned that in Kindergarten, and earlier (especially those of us with four older siblings). But DIALOGUE is key. Im hearing a lot of folks say that they think term limits will have to be established before politicians can be true to themselves and their people, without concern of the next election. If not for the election, I wonder how much different our last legislative session would have been?
