Know Your Limitations: Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. (NKJV) The great American theologian “Dirty” Harry (Clint Eastwood character) once said, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” That was a joke but still good advice. I have worked in the counseling field for over 35 years. During that time I have witnessed numerous “helpers” overtaken by the exact sin they were called and trained to address. In most cases these were individuals with good intent and concern for those they helped restore. In almost all of these situations the person did not take heed the advice that Paul gave in our verse today. Most people who are called to helping others with specific struggles experienced those same difficulties in their past. It is an easy step of relapse into old behavior when the temptations of the current struggler tempt the helper into reminiscing about his/her past behavior. Paul calls for the spiritually mature to restore fallen brothers but also to know your limitations that come with living in a weak and vulnerable human condition. Consider yourself and know your limitations lest you also fall. David Jones restorationpath.org
