Know how to prevent the disease “Leptospirosis” Do not swim, drink, or wade in water that might be contaminated with animal urine. This is especially important if you have open scratches or wounds. Wear protective clothing and footwear if you work or participate in recreational activities near water or soil that may be contaminated with animal urine. 1.Understand that treatment of leptospirosis is through antibiotics, such as doxycycline or penicillin, given at the onset of the disease. People with more severe cases may require intravenous antibiotics and hospitalization. 2. If you believe you may have leptospirosis, contact a health care provider immediately. Symptoms of leptospirosis may include: • Diarrhea. • Rash. • Muscle aches. • Stomach pain. • High fever. • Severe headache. • Chills. • Vomiting. • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes). • Red eyes.
