Many readers will recognize him, particularly those who attended Redstone Township High School between 1938 and 1966 or Brownsville Area High School between 1967 and 1975. “Gus” Cardarelli was a popular science and health teacher and a football coach who is remembered with a smile by many of his former students. In his spare time, Gus was also a legendary salesman of athletic shoes and equipment at his small sporting goods store in Republic. In 1981, Cardarelli’s tiny store sold 16,000 pairs of Nike athletic shoes, more than any other single establishment in the United States. Gus Cardarelli, who once turned down an offer to play with the Steelers, was a great storyteller.
