Knowledge Keeps Like Fish In 1917, Marcel Duchamp submitted a porcelain urinal for inclusion in the Society of Independent Artists Exhibition. A prank that accidentally resulted in the most profound artistic revolution of the 20th century? The work of a serious provocateur intent on a Copernican shift in art from craft to idea? He called it Fountain. It was rejected. He winced. And grinned. His readymade resulted in the a playful demystification of the artist. My work is a response. He studiously only chose and tilted the urinal 90 degrees and called it Fountain. I, however, began with a 25 lb bag of clay and tools. I labored over the fabrication, glazing and multiple kiln firings of 5 elements. I scratched Knowledge Keeps Like Fish on the torso, acid-etched the vitrified bits and after exploring different arrangements for the 4 elements, where they best balanced for maximum effect, I epoxied them in place. It may seem I forgot what Duchamp did. I didnt; we both work in ceramics.
