Knowledge is power. After all the discussion I realized there was a need for a new type of group File: A table of publicly-posted captioning and transcription service rates to create a transcript that can be uploaded to YouTube to create accurate captions. This file is a downloadable Word document, Service_Rates.doc. I researched all the companies listed in the YouTube Ready Program run by the Described and Captioned Media Program, plus found other companies rates. The captioning rates usually do not include transcription services, but some posted rates DO include transcription rates. Overall, it looks like the ballpark is $6/minute INCLUDING transcription. So, if you have a six-episode web series (a typical web series season), of five-minutes per episode, thats a total of 30 minutes for a web series season. Multiply that by the posted price of $6/minute including transcription, and you get $180. Now, how does $180 compare, production-cost wise? Lets take a look at Seedandspark for the answer. The project B.U.T.S. (seedandspark/studio/buts), planning to produce six episodes, it needs a gaffer as part of its crew costs. What the heck is a gaffer? I dont know. But a gaffer will cost them $150.00 per day, and they need a gaffer for three days. That means a gaffer costs $450! Another crew cost is a boom operator, listed on the project Settling Up (seedandspark/studio/settling), planning to produce eight episodes, I dont know what a boom operator is, but apparently it has to do with sound. It costs $25.00 per unit, and they need 12 units. Thats $300 total. Could a web series be produced without such essential costs being paid? Probably not! So why isnt closed captioning being regarded as an essential cost too? Unless the prices posted online and reported in the newly created group file Service_Rates.doc are incorrect, professional closed captioning looks pretty affordable to me compared to those other essential expenses!
