Known as the greatest Sufi mystic, Ibn Arabi was born in southern Spain, at a time of the flowering of Andalusian Moorish culture. He travelled widely and eventually settled in Damascus. Throughout his life he wrote over three hundred books, poems, treatises, and memoirs. He is known to his Arabic students as al-Shakyh al-Akbar, and to Latin students as Doctor Maximus. –– Courtesy Zachary Markwith
