Known historical fact throughout the history of The New York Yankees which spans almost a century, there have been only 3 Captains. 1st to ever don the mantle of Captain was the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig a man who never missed a single game, they say Yankee Stadium was the house that Ruth built, but it was Gehrig in my opinion who set the standard for what it means to wear Yankee pinstripes, keep in mind Jimmy Stewart played him in Pride of the Yankees. Then there was Thurman Munson who was the pillar and emotional anchor during the Bronx Zoo period of the 70s and who was taken from us too quickly in a plane crash. Which brings me to present era and it was just announced that the current Yankee captain Derek Jeter is going to retire. During his stellar 20 year career not only did he win 5 world series championships, which is an amazing feat, he won during a period of baseball which was gilded by controversy of steroids and hormone supplements. And never once did you hear his name amongst, the A-Rods, Bonds,McGwires and Sosas who have jaded the record books our countries greatest past time. He lead on the field and off the field and won thru hard work and always putting the team before himself. My only wish for our beloved captain is that he has one more opportunity to finish the way he started... another world series ring.
