Knows to Toes - Back to School Readiness Camp Aug 22 Today was another day filled with learning and practicing skills used while in school. The book was "Mixed Up Chameleon" which Speech-Pathologist Rachelle Viray made interactive using a felt chameleon with all the mixed up pieces. This was a super fun kids story. The campers enjoyed "Pass the bag around the ring" song where they discovered new treasures inside. Using the "What is it?" question we were able to discover what each friend had. Movement break songs included One Green Jellybean and The Grand Old Duke of York. Craft was coloring a frog with a pinch grip on the markers, trying to stay in the lines and using wiki sticks to help support the campers. Then using "pinch, pinch, rip" campers ripped pieces of tissue paper to then "scrumple, scrumple, scrumple" and create tissue paper speckles to glue on the frog to create a Speckled Frog. Centres included salt trays to work on shapes and letters, lacing station to work on developing two hand coordination and a tong centre where campers needed to pinch the tongs and pick up an assortment of small toys to help develop hand muscles. After snack we enjoyed some outdoor fun with some music (going on a bear hunt), a game of red light green light, running relays and bubble fun. One of the best parts of the day for me (Michelle) was watching the kids complete our second craft which was sidewalk chalk art. The campers were given the opportunity to draw anything they liked and many campers used the opportunity to practice writing letters they worked on in the sand and draw shapes they have learned in the "Shapes Song". There were so many moments of campers holding up their papers and saying "look what I did"! Free play included the car mat being brought out which really attracted the campers to it. The unprompted peer play was amazing to watch. We ended the day with songs and a very fun, laughter filled "If you had fun at camp today" song. Tomorrow is already the last day and this camp has flown by too quickly. Remember parents to practice the skills you child(ren) have been working on this week.
