Kodiak Alaska fisheries Gubernatorial Debate will be held tonight SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Kodiak Daily Mirror] by Julie Herrmann - Aug 28, 2014 Today will see an influx of politicians into Kodiak as Sean Parnell, Bill Walker and Byron Mallott come to Kodiak for the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce’s gubernatorial debate. Sean Parnell is the incumbent Republican governor. Byron Mallott is the Democrat candidate, and Bill Walker is the Independent candidate. “It should be pretty lively, ” said Laine Welch, the debate organizer. There will be questions chosen ahead of time, audience questions, questions between candidates, and a lightning round. In the lightning round, which Welch described as “like fish trivia”, moderator and former borough mayor Jerome Selby will read out a question, and the first candidate to ring a bell gets to answer. “It’ll be something similar to, ‘How many species of salmon are fished commercially in Alaska? ’” Welch said. “It should be fun. I think it makes for a lively format for both people in the auditorium and those listening on the radio across the state. ” The audience can submit questions and a few of those will be chosen to ask the candidates. “Of course, there’s only going to be three or four questions selected, but we’re going to make sure the candidates get all the questions so they can see what Kodiak’s questions are and what Kodiak is interested in, ” Welch said. This is a fisheries debate, so all the questions will be fisheries-related. “They’re limited to one topic, the seafood industry, but of course that includes transportation and treaties and energy, ” Welch said. The debate will take place at the Gerald C. Wilson auditorium next to Kodiak High School from 7 p. m. to 9 p. m. It will also be aired live on KMXT and can be streamed online. “I hope people show up, ” Welch said. “They can sit and listen on the radio, but if they’re not there, they don’t get to see the squirming in the seat and the body language and the glares and the smiles. ” This is the second debate in the chamber’s fall debate schedule. The chamber has two more scheduled, a local election debate on Sept. 23 and a senatorial debate on Oct. 1 The general election for governor, U.S. Senate, and state House is Nov. 4. The local election is Oct. 7. John Sackton, Editor And Publisher SeafoodNews 1-781-861-1441 Email comments to jsackton@seafood Copyright © 2014 Seafoodnews
