Korea was admitted to AWC in 2012 at the age of only 14 years. Her case is tragic: married very young she had complications during her first labour leaving her with both RVF and VVF (tears in the birth canal to both the rectum and the bladder). Her family proved to be unkind, when she started leaking urine and faeces, they left her in a small room with little food. She lost the ability to walk due to the fistulas as well as being left to her own devices, literally curled up on her side in a corner. Her 1st surgery was scheduled during AWC’s first ever Fistula Camp for which renowned Fistula surgeons come to Sierra Leone to run the surgeries of very complicated cases. She needed another two surgeries to complete the full repair and she is now completely dry. After the surgeries, the physiotherapy nurses at AWC worked with Korea closely and slowly but surely she learned to walk again. Korea’s story is a reminder of why the work of AWC is so important. But it does not end with the repair. The staff at AWC puts in a great effort to keep up with patient’s progress after their surgery and are keen to support them in any ways they can. Twice a week, Korea comes back to the centre to learn how to sew from Sydneylyn, the centre’s seamstress. This will enable her to learn a skill she can turn into a trade to sustain herself when she’s ready. She is still a child, alas one who’s already had more than a life-time worth of problems to deal with. #TrackingFistula #FistulaFriday
