South Korea local elections - the vote was seen as a referendum on President Park Geun-hyes ruling party’s handling of the April 16 ferry tragedy that killed around 300 people. Within this context, and the fact that in the past five local elections the ruling party has triumphed only once, in 1998, the ruling party posted a solid result - holding its ground in strongholds, and in the 17 most important races (nine provincial governors and the mayoral races in the eight major cities), the opposition won nine, only one more than the ruling party. Voter turnout was 56.8%, compared with 54.5% at the 2010 election. President Park’s approval rating had dropped from above 60% in the first week of April to 46%. Egypt - Abdel Fattah el-Sisi won the presidential election with 96% of the vote. Turnout was 47.5% Syria - Bashar al-Assad won with 88.7%, on 73.42% turnout UK - Newark by-election: Conservative hold (majority: 7,403 votes). CON 45%(-8.9 from 2010), UKIP 25.9%(+22.1), LAB 17.7%(-4.7). The Lib Dems finished sixth with 2.6% (-17.4) Reykjavik local election result: Social Democrats 31.9%(5 seats), Independence 25.7%(4), Bright Future 15.6%(2), Progressive 10.7%(2), Left-Green Alliance 8.3(1), Pirates 5.9%(1) ICYMI: How did the EP2014 polls do? Rather well (except in Italy and Spain) The EP2014 results in maps. Spain - Podemos, the party born out of the 15-M protest movement, which won 8% of the vote at the EU elections sending 5 MEPs to Brussels, has maintained its momentum and is seen as the third largest party in two recent polls by both GESOP and Celeste-Tel. Support for the party has primarily come from the left. China - Only 15 out of 100 university students in Beijing recognize the iconic picture of “Tank Man”. 100 days to the independence referendum in Scotland. The latest polls show a narrowing gap, but while the number of undecided remains significant, the No camp still maintains a relatively strong lead. Spain - Metroscopia poll: 62% are in favour of holding a referendum on the monarchy. If a vote were held, 36% would vote for a republic, 49% for maintaining the monarchy. Elections this week: Afghanistan, presidential II round - former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah (45% in the I round) is the favourite vs ex-finance minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai (31.56%). Colombia, presidential II round - incumbent Juan Manuel Santos (25.69% in the I round) vs Óscar Iván Zuluaga (29.25%) of the Centro Democrático (CD). Polls released between the I round and the run-off have shown scenarios with both candidates winning - predicting the result is complicated. The vote is likely to be close, and it is worth remembering that polls narrowed rapidly in the weeks ahead of the I round. Six months ago a Santos victory seemed all but certain. Turnout in the I round was 40.07% Antigua and Barbuda - 17 MPs to be elected to the House of Representatives in single-member constituencies via first-past-the-post. Georgia, local elections - while municipalities in the country have limited responsibilities, these elections matter for two reasons: 1. the geopolitical context and tensions within the region and 2. since Georgian Dream’s parliamentary victory in 2012, more than 5000 civil service officials left government, at a national or local level - as a result, all but three of the country’s municipalities are de facto controlled by the party (even though no local election took place) - the election will be an opportunity for Georgian Dream to affirm its hold over the country (in 2013 Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili won the presidential election too), especially in Tbilisi (where the outgoing mayor is of the main opposition UNM party). A useful analysis of the election can be found here. On June 8, elections were held in the breakaway region of South Ossetia. The vote, which isn’t recognised by the international community and the Tbilisi government, was won by United Ossetia, a party campaigning to join Russia. Ontario (Canada) - the 41st Ontario general election will be held on June 12. The early vote takes place after the NDP pulled the plug on the minority Liberal government. Liberals hold a slight lead in the polls, but are likely to fall short of a majority.
