Kriste Lanius Written by my friend Stck Nelson. Thought readers to your page would enjoy. We appreciate coal miners at coal-fired power plants!... Good cold morning here in Harriman Tennessee. Weatherman says its 25 degrees outside but inside my home its 72 degrees--exactly where my thermostat is set. The reason I point this out is because Im sure folks dont realize that because of these temperatures, TVA is producing over 22,000 megawatts of electricity-- allowing all of us to set our thermostats at our desired comfort level! Now this energy is being produced by several different ways: we have Nuclear units, Hydro units, Gas units, renewable units such as Solar and Wind power and finally we have COAL units. Now to my point: the fact is the largest contributor to providing your energy needs this cold morning is the very one that has a major effort against it to go away—COAL. Coal has been providing more than half of the electricity for all of us since the early 50s. The split today is less but even so, this cold morning COAL is out-producing all other sources in the Valley. In fact, its producing 15 percent more than Nuclear and more than all the other sources combined. Ive said enough, but just had to point that out before everyone decides COAL power must go. Everyone should know and consider the facts! America has depended on COAL for our energy needs during most of our lifetimes. We must keep COAL in the mix to maintain the industry and jobs it provides.
