Krynica, 4 September 2013 – Innovative Economic Scorecard prepared by PWC and the British Embassy Warsaw confirms Poland’s potential as a leading trade and investment destination in Emerging Europe. Key drivers of attractiveness are access to markets, competitiveness and sustainability. Infrastructure is the biggest barrier. “CEE Economic Scorecard – a sustainable future in a great region” published at Central Europe’s leading Economic Forum in Krynica Zdroj this week defines a clear, competitive and increasingly important position for the Emerging Europe region as a leading global business destination. With a GDP running at 57% of established EU market levels, Poland offers sustainable development potential. The key future challenge is to continue to pursue policies to improve the external environment and deliver a pro-business growth agenda. „Central and Eastern European countries must create even better conditions for domestic and foreign investors alike. Lower labour costs will no longer be sufficient; we need strategies that build a competitive advantage over other regions” – Professor Witold Orłowski, Chief Economic Adviser at PwC comments. Using globally recognised economic data sources the Scorecard compares countries in established Europe, CEE and the Emerging markets using 5 specific economic indices: • Access to markets – access to global markets and domestic market dynamics • Resources for growth – assessment of the 3 main assets that can be transformed into value added: people, capital and knowledge • Cost Competitiveness – the ration between the cost and quality of labour • Growth Sustainability financial, political and environmental sustainability of rapid GDP growth • Business Environment – assessment of institutions, tax system, infrastructure and overall transparency of the economy „Our competitive advantage in CEE is defined by predictable economic policy, skilled and cost-competitive labour and access to markets. Poland’s strengths are compounded by the country’s population and size of the economy. Poland is the 6th largest market in Europe. In terms of development infrastructure is the key challenge – Professor Orłowski from PwC says. The Economic Scorecard is available in an easy to read infographic format on I pad and comes with a special analytical application to enable readers to prioritise particular countries according to specific business development needs. “Emerging Europe is a near shore Emerging market for British business. So far we have not realised the full potential of this great region. The Economic Scorecard is a great way of identifying and analysing market opportunity based on 5 key economic indices. The application enables a more precise analysis based on individual company needs. A key message for me is do your homework well and prioritise where you want to be before you go” says Martin Oxley, Director Trade and Investment at the British Embassy in Warsaw.
