Kudos to Prairieview Elementary (Bartlett) teachers, Mrs. - TopicsExpress

Kudos to Prairieview Elementary (Bartlett) teachers, Mrs. Szydlowski and Mrs. Fox, for their efforts and commitment to honoring our veterans this past Tuesday. I received the following email from a friend whose kids attend Prairieview: “So the U46 School District Board removed the day off of school for Veterans Day two years ago. They said they would teach all about veterans and the meaning of the day on Veterans Day during school, but of course they dont - they leave it up to the individual teachers - there is no directive or curriculum coming down to make sure the day is even mentioned. So, a teacher at my boys school, Mrs. Szydlowski (5th grade), coordinated and planned a Veterans Day assembly. She invited a Retired Navy Commander to come and speak. The school’s principal invited the Cub Scouts to do the Flag Ceremony. Another teacher, Mrs. Fox (my sons teacher), asked her active duty National Guard Reserve Lieutenant husband to help with the presentation. My wife as a Cub Scout Leader got the Pack to do the color guard and the presentation for the colors. The teacher arranged the program including the singing of the National Anthem (which the music teacher had taught them along with the history of it - celebrated 200 years last month) ...... and they sang it man! The whole school learned the Star Spangled Banner and belted it out beautifully. The retired Commander talked about what Veterans Day is, how its different from Memorial Day, and showed the proper way to fold a flag and what each fold represents. See if you can pick out my 3 boys. They are all Scouts, Nick is the easiest to find, and Ill give you a hint - he has the most badges (near the front of the color guard line). Mrs. Szydlowski, and those that put this together including, of course, the members of the Military should be commended. It may not seem like much, but I believe this was the start of a tradition at the school and going forward will only get better. Stay with it for the song - worth it. There is still hope for America.” https://youtube/watch?v=8qO5Ax9k8yQ
