Kumar, Manager-Testing, XXXXX Infotech, calls in Sheela, his Associate, at 6 p.m: “Sheela, we need to complete the cost-estimate for System Testing of this bloody ‘xxxxx’ project today and submit it tomorrow. I am sending this ‘Specs’ to you now…just 400 pages… you have the Estimate Template, don’t you..? “ Are you joking…? Analysis of specs and estimating the function-points itself would take 24 hours …” “Come on yaar.. Gorilla (his boss) wants it yesterday.. Please work over-time tonight and send me a draft of the estimate” he leaves in a huff. When Sheela comes back, fuming, to her seat, her friend asks “ So, our plan for outing today goes for a toss, huh..?” Sheela looks at the Specs document, looks for the name of the person in the Development Organization who has prepared the document. A name with a phone number is given in ‘ Version tracking’ . She calls him : “Hi… I am Sheela from XXXXX. I am working on a System Testing Estimate for the ‘xxxxx’ project, you know , you are the Developers. I find you have prepared the specs. By any chance. you have the function-points estimate with you..? “ The guy on the other side asks : ” I may have… But why should I give it to you Miss…Sheela..?” “Well… you see,... I have prepared one myself too.. I just thought it would be great if both our estimates of function-points are more-or-less in sync.. Your boss would get confidence in your work.. don’t you think..?” The guy now understands the ‘catch’. “Let me see if I have it. But if you copy-paste it, client may get suspicious....” Sheela says with an audible laugh “ I told you.. I am going to use it only to make them more-or-less in sync .. thanks yaar.. I hope we both would work together soon..?” The function-point estimate comes within 5 mins ( from a different mail-id ..!) Sheela dabbles with the estimate for some time; applies the excel estimator; prepares the cost estimate in 30 minutes; calls her assistant “Hey.. Add all our usual bla bla bla nonsense.. make sure the document is not less than 30 pages .. wait till midnight and then send it to the joker (Kumar) from my mail, ok..?” She turns to her friend and says “Chalo yaar.. lets go ..” Her bemused friend asks her: “ Isn’t what you are doing a bit risky..? If he goes through the document in detail, he would find out what you have done... Sheela : “ There is a secret....Managers above 40 do not have patience or diligence to go through any document above 5 pages in detail... They just want conclusions....”
