Kunak Foundation Signs Letter of Intent with Nakowa Market Kanfanchan, Nigeria – 24 May 2014 – The Kunak Foundation has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Nakowa Market to support the modernizing of the Yakowa Nakowa Market trading spaces and establishing utility services. The Kunak Foundation will join with the Market Tradition Council and Market Union to head the development efforts, while technical, engineering and construction support will be provided by Anjeed Innova. All parties are committed to achieving United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) within the market. The particular focus will be MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty, MDG 3: Promote Gender equality and MDG 7: Environmental Sustainability. Sarkin Kasuwa (Chairman of the Market) expressed his commitment to supporting the modernization. The social and economic benefits of this project are substantial. In an area where youth employment is estimated as high as 60%, the project will provide numerous short-term and long-term jobs. In line with MDG 3: Promote Gender Equality, up to 25% of the short-term jobs will be held by women, with a planned a minimum 50% female staff when the project moves into the operation and management stage. The use of locally produced materials for construction will also benefit the local economy. The construction of centralized market buildings will bring immediate improvement to market sanitation and general health. It will also increase in efficiency of trade and commerce. In line with MDG 7: Environmental Sustainability, the installation of solar energy modules will provide clean, renewable and reliable solar power. It will also allow the market to be self-sufficient in its power consumption needs. Gideon Nyan, CEO of Anjeed Innova, expressed his excitement with the level of commitment shown by the tradition council and the union. He also stated that this type of development is much needed in the area and will move the market forward in providing a safe and efficient trading environment for all. The Yakowa Market Off-Grid Project has the potential to impact the lives of up to 500,000 people within a large rural area by improving the trading conditions of one of the largest markets within Southern Kaduna.
