Kung Fu – a way to get out of your own way The term Kung Fu refers to the hard work and time invested in developing a skill. When we think of Kung Fu we think of martial arts and of Jackie Chan or Jet Li kicking someone’s ass however the broad definition of the term also has applications in our every day life. Hard work, discipline and time given to develop a new skill always produces a result. Most importantly, it produces a result far beyond what you thought you were capable of. I attend Taha’s classes regularly and while the concept of applying Kung Fu in my life is understood intellectually by me, its always easy to be distracted by something else. I find that being in Taha’s class, attending regularly and practicing my skills has not only benefitted me physically by improving my fitness, it has allowed me to apply these principles in my work and life. Firstly, having a teacher is always important. I learn a lot from other people in my everyday life, I feel like an eternal student and this is very humbling. I can assure you that Taha is as good as they come. Secondly, Kung Fu has taught me to try to be more disciplined. Showing up every week is a commitment and that means even if the gremlin inside doesn’t want to go, that I still do it. Thirdly the physical aspect of this martial art helps me with many things. The physicality of it always de-stresses and makes me feel good all week long. My body can do amazing things, more than I realized and I consider myself to be quite athletic. It pushes the boundaries of what I think is possible and helps me realize that what I think I can do is not what I can actually do.
