Kurseong NGO Chetna undertakes plantation drive KURSEONG, 26 Jul 2014: To bring about a sense of awareness among people on a number of society related issues, a recently formed Kurseong-based NGO named Chetna has started several activities on this subject. The organisation’s initial endeavour was to plant tree saplings in the premises of the SB Dey Sanatorium i. Chetna spokesperson Chubu Poddar told this correspondent the organisation planted about 500 varieties of various plants Friday at the sanatorium, popularly known as the TB hospital area. Apart from Chetna’s members, senior officials of the forest and soil conservation departments including representatives of the SB Dey Sanatorium were also present to lend a hand in the noble initiative. More than 15 different varieties of saplings such as walnut, cyprus, Jarul, Kemuna and Paanisat were planted during the programme that was inaugurated by Soil Conservation department DFO JB Chhetri. Poddar said the organization members have decided to oversee the saplings’ proper growth and take appropriate measures to nurture them to ensure they grow into full-fledged trees. Further, he informed Chetna will also organise awareness programmes among the public on various social and public related issues, including environment, health, human trafficking and human rights and other government sanctioned schemes hitherto unknown to many members of the general public.
