LA NUEVA ESPANA 2014.- No melting pot here but a salad of sorts. The wondrous native Mexican peoples go about their business of surviving by selling their wares to tourists and being poor, very poor, steadfast in the ways of their cultures, The Europeans and South Americans that live here own the restaurants, shops, other businesses and have made real estate here pricey. Jazz artists from other parts of Mexico now live or are based here and regularly jam with jazz cats from other countries that are here as well (this is the fun part). How to put this delicately? You can sense an air of: San Cristobal de Las Casas is for the Coletos and then there is everyone else. A Coleto refers to a person who is from San Cris, To this end, I had an experience at a bank here three days ago that Im taking to the Federal Attorneys Office of the Consumer (PROFECO). Just for the hell of it. Dont ever f*** with me. If you use the term indocumentado here, everyone immediately thinks about or refers to the central americans in transit that live below rat status. You even see them on street corners begging for pennies so as to try to get back home or if they are brave enough to continue the trek to El Norte. But wait! What are the Europeans and south american people that just stay here called? In transit visitors. What in the hell is an in transit visitor? I know! People that are probably here on tourist visas (and in some cases overstayed) working as wait staff in the coffee shops, or sitting on street corners with their guitars or playing in bistros and are most probably making some pesos. These are not indocumentados? some may be, some perhaps are not. I guess being fair skinned and running around with your hair in braids is trendy and tolerated (lets turn the other way because this helps the economy). I dont really know. Hippies young and old all over the place! What do you call a hippie in 2014? Thank you Pilla Piano. I will always cherish your friendship. But I love your music more!
