LA had a magnitude 4.4 earthquake this morning...in an area in which no earthquake had ever been recorded. I am reminded of the Sylmar/San Fernando Valley earthquake on Feb. 9, 1971. It was a tragic quake that devastated Southern California. I was in 2nd grade...it is still quite vivid in my memory. There was nowhere to hide...I watched the sidewalk buckle and the cinderblock fences sway as my family stood, huddled in the front doorway. The sound....the rumble...the utter feeling of helplessness and fear as my dad struggled to find my little brother in our violently shaking house. He had snuck into my parents room to sleep in their bed, unnoticed by them. Watching my dad be thrown from one wall into the other, as he navigated the hallway, was terrifying. We had to sleep together in the living room for several nights afterwards...as the aftershocks were numerous and frightening as hell. 65 people lost their lives in this quake...47 of which occurred when the VA hospital collapsed. I thought Id share some pics of the damage.
