LAABAAN is a senegambian tradition done during wollof marriage ceremonies. The aim of the tradition is to show the people present during the ceremony whether the lady was a virgin or not. According to the tradition, presence of blood stain on the bedsheet the couple used overnight is an indication that the lady was a virgin. The tradition is however fading away. Should it be revived so as to motivate the young ladies to keep their chastity before marriage or are we better off without such traditions?
