LADY LITERATURE EVANGELISTS “The Lord announced the word, and great was the company of those who proclaimed it” Psalm 68:11 Filipino women literature evangelists have been among the outstanding soul winners in the literature program. Two women, Miss Semillano and Mrs Caballero, were sent to canvass on Romblon Island. When they arrived, they began to canvass for their book, The Great Controversy. The people were very prejudiced and would not receive them into their homes. After a few days of mounting difficulties, the pair decided to try a different approach. Early one morning they went to the plaza and set up a table with vegetables and a small, single-burner stove. They began to prepare a meal. Soon there was a crowd of people standing around asking questions. The woman told them they were giving a demonstration on healthful cooking, so the people would know how to preserve the vitamins when cooking their food, and thereby, receive the most benefit from it. The people were very interested in this. Each day the crowd became larger as the people witnessed the cooking demonstrations. After a few days the women once again resumed their canvassing work. This time it was an entirely different story. Doors were opened wide, and they were received into every home. They had no difficulty in giving their canvass for their book, The Great Controversy, and sales were made throughout the island. Soon they found people who were interested in Bible study. They began to hold cottage meetings and organized a branch Sabbath School. After working for three months on Romblon Island, the women sent a letter to the mission office requesting that a minister be sent to Romblon to examine candidates and to conduct a baptism. The publishing department secretary was requested by the mission president to visit Romblon Island and investigate the situation. When the publishing department secretary arrived, he met with the baptismal candidates on Friday evening and spent four hours examining these people. He soon learned they were well instructed in the Adventist faith, and a baptism was arranged for the next day. Sabbath morning a beautiful baptismal service took place at the seaside. Fifty persons were baptized. The two women continued their work in Romblon, and, before leaving a second baptism was conducted in which fifty-three more persons were baptized. Although they were working under discouraging circumstances in the beginning of their work, Miss Semillano and Mrs Caballero were not discouraged. By making a different approach in their work, they eventually were able to see 103 people baptized into the Adventist faith. Today we pray for our dedicated lady literature evangelists all over the world. Miracles of Grace
