LAGOS DENIES ALLEGATION OF MASS DEMOLITION Lagos State Government has denied the allegation by the residents of Iganmu, Badiya that its plan to expand the Gaskiya-College and Sari-Iganmu Roads will result in mass demolition of houses within the area. The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who allayed the fear of the residents at a stakeholders’ meeting, held at the Ladipo Primary School, Amukoko recently, said government has no intention to do extensive demolition in order to expand the road from the present 8 Metres to 13.4km. While noting that some shops and fences are on the right of way, the Commissioner disclosed that such will be removed in the overall interest of the people, adding that property owners with the required certified documents by the Ministry of Physical Planning will be compensated. He also dispelled the rumour that some rich individuals residing in the area have bought their ways with the government thereby influencing the construction of the road project in order to favour them, stressing that the road alignment cannot be skewed to favour anyone and assured that the alignment is determined by the final destination of the road. He therefore solicited for their support and cooperation to ensure that the project is delivered within the planned 20 months construction period, adding that the Ministry will continue to listen to their complaints and do everything within its power to resolve them. Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ganiyu Johnson emphasized that the project, which has been awarded to Messrs Julius Berger Plc., will enhance the free flow of traffic in the area while also serving as an alternative bye–pass for motorists using the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at Alaba and Orile-Iganmu Bus-Stops. He stressed that the scope of work on the 3.2km roads, which has the bridge component, includes replacement of the dumping area with good soil while walkways, drains, service ducts, median barriers, streetlights and other necessary features associated with a standard road will be provided. Gaskiya College Road is presently a 2-lane 1,520m long carriageway with an average width of 8m long and a 55m long bridge component. It connects Alaba Cemetery Road to Moshood Abiola Road (formerly Apapa Road). Sari-Iganmu Road also takes off from Alaba-Cemetery Road and connects back to the Lagos Badagry Expressway with an average width of 9m and a 55m long bridge component. The road which is expected to be completed in 20 months will improve road network and enhance interconnectivity around the area.
