LAGOS HOSTS AFRICA GEOSPATIAL FORUM Lagos State Government has played a significant role in propagating the application of geospatial technologies across various sectors in the country and region, apart from ensuring equitable access and security to land, forest and natural resources. Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, made the declaration while declaring open the 2014 Africa Geospatial Forum held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island and organized by the State Office of Surveyor- General, in conjunction with Africa Geospatial Media and Communication. Represented by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, the Governor stated that geospatial technology plays an essential role in addressing various governance and societal issues by enabling agencies to carry out their jobs quickly and more efficiently and provide relevant information to the right people, at the right time and place. He stressed that the State has also emerged as a key player in providing geographical information to the nation as various agencies in the country, from natural resources to agriculture and land management, have started to implement geospatial technology widely in their everyday operation. The Governor noted that the summit, themed “Smart Governance: Connecting Geospatial Community’’, has the sole objective of bringing together stakeholders in the geospatial community to deliberate on variety of topics and also chart out the future of geospatial technology in Africa. Earlier in his welcome address, the Surveyor General of Lagos State, Mr. Joseph Agbenla, said the forum was meant to showcase the tremendous applicability of geospatial technology in Nigeria and across Africa. Agbenla disclosed that the forum would enhance collaboration within various agencies thereby resulting in smart and functional governance for the people of Lagos State, Nigeria and Africa in general, in regards to planning, infrastructural development, land administration, urban renewal, human resources and many others. Highlight of the opening ceremony was an exhibition, which showcases some of the latest technologies and trends in the geospatial domain. The Exhibitors included; Trimbes, Polaris Digital Ltd, LASRRA, Lagos Ministry of Information and Strategy, Office of Sports, Kropmann Comm. Ltd, Aerodata International Survey, among others.
