LAGOS REVIEWS WORKERS SALARY Lagos State government has said it is planning to review its work force salaries upward this year as agreed for its upward review every three years. The State Commissioner for the Establishment, Training and Pension, Mrs. Florence Modupeola Oguntuase disclosed this while declaring opened the 2014 Lagos State Joint Public Service negotiating Council bi-annual meeting. She said the upward review of the salary has matured because it is over three years at which one was increased last while the proposal has already been prepared but it has not been submitted to the state executive council through the state governor, adding that the actual percentage of the increment is not yet known. Oguntuase said that the seeming rancour at the state University (LASU) is being looked into as the committee inaugurated by the state executive council has been meeting with the different stakeholders adding that compromised on the matter is very realistic. Meanwhile, the Commissioner has called on the workers unions in the state to strengthen their efforts in seeing that the workers’ day celebration in the state wears new look by having a standard and a routine protocol, condemning what happened at 2014 workers day celebration which was hijacked. In the goodwill message, the State Head of Service, Mrs Oluseyi Williams called on the workers’ unions to observe diligence and due process while making their demands and promised speedy and full implementation when approved by the State Executive Council. She said that most staff are neglecting the free medical check-up instituted by Government which is aiming at helping in curbing untimely death of government workers, rather than the insinuation that government want to lay workers off. The vice chairman of the negotiating Council, Mr Femi Oyegoke has challenged the State Government on the improve welfare of its staff saying the architects of good government are the civil servants. While calling on the upward review of the workers’ salary, he said he was aware of the improvement in the state internally generated revenue (IGR) and the Federal Allocation to the State. Oyegoke promised that the 2015 general election will be different from the previous ones as the unions would not allow workers to be used as electoral tools adding that the State should jerk up its counterpart funding of the pension from the present 7.5% to 15% as done by some state in the federation. He further opined that the teachers allowance should be restored to 27.5% from the present 11%. While welcoming the participants, the chairman to the negotiating council and the Permanent Secretary Office of the Establishment and Training, Mrs Sade Jaji called for jaw jaw in solving problems rather than running away from the ways to solve problems.
