LAGOS SET TO IMPROVE WAEC RESULTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS The Lagos State Government has called for collective and effective monitoring of students by teachers, parents and all stakeholders to upturn the current poor performance of students at external examinations, especially the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE. The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, made the observation at a meeting with school principals, teachers, parents, guardians and SS 3 students in the State Education District 1, organised to draw the attention of stakeholders to issues that would promote academic excellence in WASSCE. Oladunjoye stated that the State Government had put mechanism in place to ensure that only competent and well behaved students are allowed to participate in the yearly WASSCE, adding that a screening examination will now be written by students prior to their mock examination before they are finally registered for the external exterminations. According to her, “Payment of WASSCE fees by the State Government will no longer be automatic; it will be determined by the conduct of students, punctuality, overall behavioral pattern and the attendant of parents/guardian at meetings and Open Days.’’ She urged parents to invest in the future of their children by getting them academic materials that will aid their performance in classrooms rather than spending money on frivolities. The Commissioner listed some extra measures already put in place by government for the SS3 students to include extra coaching after school hours, Saturday coaching as well as Christmas break coaching. Parents who made some submissions during the meeting advised other parents to desist from registering their wards for WASSCE when they are still in SS1 or SS2. They also advised government to revisit the introduction of punishment to erring students in schools, including monitoring team to enforce discipline among students. Parents of SS3 students whose children are combining school with apprenticeship were advised to withdraw such children from the latter for the period of WASSCE to enable them have ample time for their studies.
