LAKELAND, Fla. - Its shaping up to be a record year for gun sales in Florida, based on the number of background checks filed with the state. At the current pace, the state will conduct nearly 800,000 background checks by the end of 2013 -- nearly the double the number of checks in 2007. Traditionally, Black Friday is one of the biggest days of the years for gun shops, and that may still be the case, but this year was different. For my shop here once we finished up March, I was basically in the same place last year in August in terms of sales, said Mark Smith, Owner of Ultimate Arms in Lakeland. So we did about nine months worth of sales in the first three months of the year.
