LAKSHMI AMMA AND HOW SHE CONQURED HER EVEREST I walked into our kitchen and couldn’t believe what I was seeing! My Amma and Lakshmi Amma were facing each other. Amma was outwardly calm, but I could make out she was as anxious as I was. She stretches out her hand slowly... Well kiddies! Let me tell you a story, a story of happiness, perseverance, tragedy, evil, aliens and more importantly new beginnings. Few years back, our household welcomed a new member, Lakshmi Amma, into our fold to help around our home. But one day everything changed. We started noticing changes, albeit small but what we didn’t realize how unmanageable and sticky those changes would become. Let me tell you, those were horrible times. I was convinced she was abducted by Aliens and brain washed. It was painful to watch and we tried to convince her, cajole her, even organized interventions but to no avail. She was determined, addicted and obsessed. Yes, she could not resist a brand new Teflon coated non sticky pan. She armed with her scrubber would gleefully scrub away all the Teflon coating from the pots and pans. A new pan would only survive few days in my home. Slowly but surely our home was becoming a graveyard for pans. We had enough and took matters into our hands and started washing the non-sticky pans ourselves. Lakshmi Amma protested, pleaded but we were unmoved and it was for good of all, pans included. This brings us to the present situation. Amma stretches out her hand slowly and says “Lakshmi, give me the new pan and put the metal scrubber down now!. Lakshmi Amma tightens her grip around the handle and squishes the scrubber determinedly. It’s the battle of stares, I smirk and look at the amateur. Lakshmi Amma should know better than to challenge my Ammas stare, that baby took many a kid down and own up to naughtiness. Finally, she hands back the pan and looks defeated. Amma gently smiles, they look at each other and nod. We sigh in relief, the worst is over. To this day whenever she sees a new pan, she looks at it longingly and gives us the evil eye. But it is safe to say she is on the road to recovery. That my friends is how Lakshmi Amma conquered her Everest…Teflon Everest!
