LAMBDA TRAMPERS trip THIS Sunday - LORD OF THE RINGS country and looking good. This outing will be to Lake Clearwater & Mount Sunday and is ideal trip for both Lambda Trampers & Walkers. Assemble in Bishop Street (between Bealey Ave & Purchas Street) near #23 in time for a 8am departure to the Hakatere Conservation Park in the Ashburton Lakes where well start the day with a cuppa at Steve Attwoods family bach. Then a leisurely walk from the bach to circumnavigate Lake Clearwater. This is an easy contour walk along glaciated tussock terraces and rolling low hills with spectacular high country views and the opportunity for a swim along the way or at the end. Features include unique ‘kettle hole’ landscape with rare communities of plants, the opportunity to see the rare crested grebe and other bird life, and spot trout from the high banks (keen anglers could even throw in a small expandable rod if they wanted to do a spot of fishing along the way). The route passes through one of the last large stands of red tussock swamp left in the country which is classed as a nationally significant wetland. Rare bitterns are sometimes seen (though more often just heard) here. Back at the bach we’ll get back into the cars for a short drive to Mt Sunday. Located in the upper Rangitata valley near Erehwon, this walk offers spectacular views into the north eastern corner of Mt Cook National Park and the Garden of Eden and ice fields. The walk is very easy except for the moderately steep, but short, climb to the top of Mt Sunday itself which was the site of the Edoras Village set for Lord of the Rings. The views from the top are worth the 10 to 15 minutes effort. For those people who are car pooling there is a cost of $25 (unwaged $19) Notes for this tramp: This is open, exposed high country with very few opportunities for shade. Bring hats, plenty of water and sunburn cream. Drivers note that access to Lake Clearwater and Mt Sunday includes several kilometres of shingle road. Steve will be leading this trip, for further details he can be contacted on 355-4644
