LANSING - Rep. Glardon votes in favor of major road improvement plan in House The Michigan House Thursday overwhelmingly approved a sweeping transportation improvement plan that makes more efficient use of taxpayer dollars, which will pump an additional $500 million annually to fix Michigan roads and bridges, state Rep. Ben Glardon announced. The plan, which was approved with bipartisan support, calls for structural changes in the state’s transportation funding, focusing on increased efficiency, better quality and improved fairness to increase road funding to a minimum of $450 million in 2015. The funding will then grow to $500 million annually, with the potential for even greater investments in the future. “The plan makes more efficient use of taxpayer dollars so we can allocate more funding to help fix our roads and bridges,” said Glardon, vice chair of the House Transportation Committee. “Michigan residents have said loud and clear that they want better roads, and want the state to use existing transportation funds in the most efficient way possible. We’ve listened to people’s concerns by reforming the way the state allocates transportation funding. Although the plan is not meant to be a cure-all for fixing our roads, it’s a great foundation to build on.” The package also creates warranty requirements on road and bridge improvement projects, dedicates available sales tax revenue to roads while protecting funding for schools and local governments, and expands the competitive bidding process to ensure funding is used most efficiently. The bills now go to the Senate for consideration.
