LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags within the state Capitol complex to be lowered to half-staff Wednesday, Nov. 5, in honor of former state Sen. Walter H. North, of St. Ignace, who died Friday. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Thursday, Nov. 6. “Walt was a strong advocate for the people of Northern Michigan, working to provide quality services and preserve our state’s landmarks for generations to come, “ Snyder said. “On behalf of all Michiganders, I thank Walt for the great contributions he made to our state during his time in public service and I extend sincere condolences to his family and friends.” North was elected to the state Senate in 1994 and served the 37th District for two terms. During his time in the Legislature, North was an instrumental part of the expansion of the St. Ignace municipal marina as well as a number of health care and public safety facilities. He was also a strong supporter of the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk and developed a comprehensive maintenance program for the Mackinac Bridge. Prior to his time in the Legislature, North worked with the Mackinac Bridge Authority, becoming executive secretary in 1983, a position he held for nearly a decade. North also worked with the Michigan Department of the Treasury and served in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Air Force. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the St. Ignace United Methodist Church. This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
