LAPEER TWP. — He’s been implicated in two deaths. The Lapeer Township Police Dept. knows where he is. They’re just waiting for Lefty to come out of the house. Lefty is a mixed breed Rottweiler and while Lapeer Township Police Chief Jerry Gwyn said “He’s as friendly as can be,” he added Lefty “has no use for other pets.” Gwyn said Lefty has lived at his owner’s parents’ house on Greenwood Road for the past six years because his owner lives in a community with an ordinance banning Rottweilers. However, Gwyn said, Lefty’s been accused of killing two other dogs in the neighborhood in the past two years and last month a Lapeer County judge issued an order declaring him a dangerous animal. Gwyn said part of that order required Lefty to be on a chain or behind a fence when outside. He said neighbors complained at 10:56 a.m. Tuesday that Lefty was running loose in violation of the court order. He said when he and animal control officers arrived at the home on the 1700 block of Greenwood Road, Lefty was in the house but his chain was covered with snow and there were paw prints in the yard. “It’s an ongoing issue,” Gwyn said. He said he doesn’t plan to get a search warrant to seize Lefty, but if his officers find the dog loose outside, they’re taking him to animal control and his owners will be back in front of a judge. — Phil Foley The photos below are of Lefty. They show him not in his yard, but in the street or on someone elses property. He is not being restrained by an invisible fence and allowed to run loose. They (the owners of Lefty) claim he doesnt run loose. Since last fall this dog has been responsible for the deaths of two other dogs and is responsible for families in this neighborhood not able to have their kids or animals in the yard unattended. Thats right, even the children, who saw this dog kill the other dogs, dont feel safe in their own yards. But Lapeer wont just go seize him. Are we going to have a repeat of what happened last summer? Are they going to wait until a person (most likely a child) is severely harmed? Arent the other two dogs important? How about the other dogs that have survived the dog fights that arent being reported?
