LAS VEGAS: Univision news story on the Controversy Over the Euthanasia of Animals. Big thanks to Ruby Lopez for representing NKLV and Silvia Nelles for the translation of the story. As with any story the figures are not always accurate. According to last years numbers The Animal Foundation killed 75% of the cats and 38% of the dogs, not 25% as stated in the report. News anchor: The Animal Foundation and NKLV find themselves in conflict over the euthanizing of animals. Yaraldin Deavila (female reporter) spoke with both groups. Yeraldin Deavila: 54% of cats and dogs were euthanized this year, a fact that has outraged NKLV, a group that is against the euthanization of animals. 75% of cats and 25% of dogs were euthanized. The Animal Foundation is the main shelter in the valley and has capacity for approximately 1,000 animals. Patricia Farnan, Animal Foundation representative: They cant be medicated or cant be touched, played with or what have you. In those cases, they wont be able to be adopted. It has been two years that an animal has been euthanized for a lack of space. Yeraldin Deavila: However, the NKLV says all the contrary. Ruby Lopez, NKLV representative: They continue to sacrifice animals at approximately 60 a day while they have 50% empty space. Yeraldin Deavila: This organization obtains their information from informants that work within The Animal Foundation and they assure us that The Animal Foundation uses excuses such as an ear infection and broken tooth to justify the death of these animals. This is what The Animal Foundations response was... Patricia Farnan: We utilize veterinarians in the shelter and all the animals are examined every day. Ruby Lopez: They kill animals because it is cheaper. Yeraldin Deavila: The Animal Foundation assures us that to reduce the number of animals sacrificed, they offer discounts so that the community adopts a pet.
