LAST ACT © Mike Lee Throughout his life he was aware from childhood that he never did fit-in, that he had had no friends or close companions. During school years, he was not included with his classmates, didn’t make ‘the team’ and after school he just went home, and went alone. When he grew-up, and after college, he then entered-in the work force, but was still alone. He sat alone; his desk was in the back and no one dealt with him. He did his job then at the end of day, he left the office and again when home alone. He never bought a house, but rented; did not buy a car – he rode the bus – and lived a simple, uneventful life as independent and, again, alone. He never married, had no girlfriend; had a cat, but that was it. His conversations were one-sided for he had no one to talk to. But it didn’t make him angry and it didn’t make him sad because he held-out hope that one day things would change. They never did. In his sixties he concluded that he could – and would – make for himself a name. He’d get attention that throughout life he’d been denied. And so he climbed the tallest building, walked out on the top-floor deck where tourists stand and snap their photos to show friends and family New York City. He watched for the moment when all eyes were looking elsewhere, climbed the fence and heard a voice yell in the crowd, but he ignored it. Then a woman begged him not to jump, but he just smiled and said, “I have to” and let go the railing and plunged to the fame that was denied him all his life.
