LAST DFAS LECTURE FOR 2014 Handel’s ‘Messiah’ – A Christmas Classic The Costa del Sol lecture will cover Handel’s influence on his musical contemporaries and the profound effect his larger than life personality also had on the literary, visual and decorative arts – both in his lifetime and after his death in 1759 – assessing the cultural influences Handel had on a nation, as he wrote “from whom I have received so generous a protection”. Despite his German birth and his Italian musical training, Handel remains one of the most important composers that England ever nurtured. Some music pieces will be performed by the lecturer.
