LAST SUMMER the entire City of Phoenix was enveloped in a CLOUD OF DUST so dense you could not see more than a few feet and breathing ??? well, you needed a particle mask... MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The dust has settled in south-central Arizona for now, leaving behind some clouds, just a few sprinkles of rain and light breezes. Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Phoenix say there is some possibility Saturday of shifting winds, but not like the dust storm that knocked out power and temporarily grounded some flights out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Friday afternoon. The rolling wall of dust started in southern Pinal County and moved northwest through Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported, and television footage showed mangled awnings on some mobile homes in Florence along with some uprooted trees in the city south of Phoenix. Gateway Airport officials say flight operations were back to normal by Friday afternoon, and things remained quiet Saturday morning.
