LAST VEGAS – 2 and a half stars out of 5 – Verdict: A Hangover for the superannuated set. - Here’s a wolfpack with extra wrinkles. After ageing hotshot Billy proposes to his much younger girlfriend, he rounds up his three oldest friends – Archie, Sam and Paddy – for a bachelors’ weekend in Vegas. But if you’re expecting outrageous taboo-breaking in the Hangover tradition, don’t: Last Vegas is about as tame and conventional as comedies get. The four oldies get a chance to clear the cobwebs in Sin City. They play the tables, ogle girls, crash nightclubs, mistakenly chat up drag queens, and compete for the attentions of a good-sport cocktail singer Diana. Along the way they get to work out long-held grudges and face up to mortality. It’s cringeworthy stuff at times but makes good use of its four stars’ familiar personas. Douglas gets to be the preening charmer; De Niro, the grumpy, pugilistic type; Kline, professorial; and Freeman, the voice of wisdom. It’s well-acted, harmless fun, so long as you don’t thinka bout how much more vital these four Oscar winners actually were making great movies back in their heyday. There are some things not even a weekend in Vegas can bring back to life. (The Sunday Telegraph)
