LASU fee: Fashola’s gesture, Greek gift –PDP August 9, 2014 By Temidayo Akinsuyi – Snr. Correspondent, Lagos The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter, has berated Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, over the reduction in the tuition fees of the Lagos State University (LASU). The party, in a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, said the reduction was politically induced and not because of the governor’s genuine interest in the education of the students. Describing the reduction as a ‘Greek gift,’ the party further said the governor’s action was due to the forthcoming general election and the resolve of the parents and students to vote out the APC due to its anti-people policies. “The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP has welcomed the reversal of the exorbitant LASU school fees, but posits that the gesture is momentary, deceitful and politically-induced rather than being in good faith. The PDP also wondered why Fashola would usually prove stubborn and ignore public outcry, thereby causing irredeemable losses in the system, “the eight-months-old doctors’ strike that led to over 3,000 deaths should be fresh on our minds,” the PDP said. In the opinion of the party, Governor Fashola was jolted by the open aspersions and protests organised by all unions on the campus during the convocation programme, where he was present, “so he needed to save his face to escape anymore terrible disgrace, thus the announcement of unplanned reversal of the fees.” “ We are alerting Lagosians to expect many more Greek gifts from the APC as the 2015 Lagos governorship election gets close. We congratulate the dogged unions of LASU on the reversal of the school fees. The reversal is obviously with ulterior motives. The elections are near, being one of the motives,” the PDP said.
