LATEST LORD VOLTURE INTERVIEW @ Fasteriff - Webzine about Rock & Metal Music You have founded Lord Volture in 2006. How did you met each other ? David Marcelis : Well, actually in 2006 I started writing the songs for our debut album Beast Of Thunder, which Paul Marcelis (Guitars) and I recorded with help of studio producer Yuma van Eekelen over 2007-2009. The touring band was founded early 2010. We first recruited Simon Geurts (Bass) as we knew him well already from previous bands. Then we asked Leon Hermans (Guitars) to do an audition as I was familiar with his guitar play in his band BURN. Finally we found our drummer in Frank Wintermans who was actually a high-school friend of Paul. When did you begin to play music ? Is that bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest who have inspired you ? David : I began singing when I was thirteen years old and wanted to start a metal band. Not being able to play any other instrument, singing was the obvious choice. Initially I was inspired mostly by James Hetfield of Metallica. Only after several years while listening to singers such as Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Matt Barlow (Iced Earth), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Sean Peck (Cage) and Eric Adams (Manowar) I developed my use of falset and high range. Paul Marcelis : I started playing acoustic guitar when I was eight years old and picked up the electric guitar when I was about eleven. At the same time I found out that metal is not only amazing to listen to, but to play as well. With initially old school thrash bands such as Megadeth and Metallica and later also more heavy metal / hard rock bands such as Whitesnake there has always been enough to take inspiration from! Due to the fact you are brother, you have grew up both, you played together when you were young. David : Yes, that is right. Paul and I have been in bands together since I was thirteen and he was only eleven years old. It’s great to share this experience with my brother. Tell me about “Beast Of Thunder” (feat. Jeff Waters of Annihilator) ? How was this first experience ? David : As we worked so long to record the album, I was very excited when we did our first live shows and album release in the first half of 2010. Also the reactions to the album in the media were magnificent. We had worked on it for several years, but to the outside world the album and the band suddenly came out of nowhere and the response was overwhelming. Paul : Getting Jeff Waters to play along was the cherry on the cake for me. It just so happened that around the time that we were finishing up the recordings of Beast Of Thunder that I went to see him doing a guitar-clinic. Instead of asking for an autograph I asked if he was interested in doing a guest solo on our upcoming debut album. After sending him some tracks he said he loved the music and would happily play a solo on our album. “Never Cry Wolf” (feat. Sean Peck of Cage) has gave you lot of popularity in 2011. How could you explain this ? David : I think the main difference between Beast Of Thunder and Never Cry Wolf was that Never Cry Wolf was a real band effort, while Beast Of Thunder was more of a studio project. As a result Never Cry Wolf has become more dynamic and lively. In addition I had learned a lot composition wise and the songs on Never Cry Wolf are more coherent and mature than those on Beast Of Thunder. With the upcoming studio album I again feel that my song writing has improved. It’s great to be able to learn with each experience. Having Sean Peck sing alongside me about the battle of Teutoburg Forest between the Germanic tribes and the Romans in the “Into The Lair Of A Lion” song was an amazing experience and something I’m still proud of today! All of this made Never Cry Wolf a stronger album than its predecessor, but also because of other reasons our popularity increased in the years 2011-2012. For example, the album promotion was much more thorough and we toured more and more intensively in the Netherlands and did our first shows and tours in other regions in Europe. You have made lot of dates with bands like Primal Fear, Firewind, Tim Ripper Owens, Blaze Bayley, Vicious Rumors, Tokyo Blade, Enforcer, Steelwing, Attacker and numerous others, while touring through the larger part of Europe. What’s your best memory ? David : That is a difficult question because we have so many good touring experiences in different contexts. Probably some of our best memories are Roadgrill Open Air, Occultfest, Ponferrada Spain, Litvínov Czech Republic, Swordbrothers Festival Germany, Tallinn Estonia, Riga Latvia, Northern Ireland, Denmark and Very ‘Eavy Festival. Meeting and sharing the stage with metal legends like Primal Fear and Time Ripper Owens are among the highlights too. You have signed with Mausoleum Records. Could you tell us what changes this Label has gave to you ? David : Our previous albums were self-releases and with the new album coming on Mausoleum Records we expect to reach many more people through promotion and more solid distribution. Obviously we also hope that our signing will also open doors to new festivals and tours. You have made a photoshoot in a very original place in the North of Holland with big antennas. Why did you chose this place ? David : With each new album we choose a new background for a photoshoot. We try to make it something special and unique each time. The Westerbork antennas with their huge corroded metal structures make a very suitable backdrop. Your new album will be release at the end of this year. What can you tell us about it ? David : The new album will come in September. The exact release date will be announced later, but on Thursday this week we already reveal the album cover, album title, tracklist and the name of a famous guest musician. You’ll play at POWER & GLORY FEST in Hatfield, England, on 29th August 2015. Other bands confirmed so far include our Dutch colleagues MARTYR, and also HUREMENT, STAMPEDE, SALEM, MEANSTEED and TOLEDO STEEL. How does it feel to play In front of lot of people ? David : It is amazing when a large crowds gathers and sings and bangs along on our songs. I’m always surprised there are many people turning up in Lord Volture T-shirts. Our goal is to share good music with others and to see that our efforts are being appreciated is what it makes worth it all. That is really special. But even on week days if not so many people turn up for a show we still put in 110% of energy and play as if headlining Wacken or Hellfest. Everyone deserves a good show. Tonight, you play in Arras, do you like France ? Do you speak a little bit French ? David : We enjoy France a lot. Tonight’s the third time we play Arras. Tomorrow we hit Saint-Omer for the first time. It seems our fan base in northern France it getting pretty strong. I hope we can expand our reach to the south with the coming album. To closed this interview, what would you to say ? David : Everybody keep an eye on our website and social media this week for news about the coming album. It will be 100% metal, continuing on Never Cry Wolf, but heavier, meaner and more solid than ever before. Thanks for the interview, Roxane, and enjoy the show! fasteriff/#!lordvoltureinterview/c1wnl
