LAW CLERK Temporary Full Time Opportunity, 35-Hours/Week – Contract until June 19, 2015 Location: Kanata Satellite Office (Address: 150 Katimavik Road, Suite 2000 Kanata, Ontario K2L 2N2) The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Ottawa is committed to protecting the children and youth of our community from abuse and neglect. We work in collaboration with community partners to ensure their well-being and to strengthen the capacity of families and the communities in which they live. The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa seeks an energetic, committed Law Clerk to join their Legal Department on a temporary basis. With more than 10 counsels, this position is part of the third largest in-house child protection legal department in the province. This position will be working at our Kanata office and will primarily be supporting the Counsel working at this location. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Legal Services, the Law Clerk will assume the following responsibilities: · Attend court as an agent on behalf of legal counsel when and if required; · Prepares complete and competent Conference Briefs, Statement of Agreed Facts and Trial Records for legal proceedings; · Provide Society staff with information regarding legal documentation requirements in preparation for court hearings; · Prepares drafts of Status Review Applications on behalf of the Child Protection Worker; · Checks all Notices, Applications and Affidavits for completion and accuracy; · Completes research of law publications and prepares overview of case law relating to a specific case; · Liaise with the Children’s Aid Society professionals and external professionals requesting access to, or information from, files generated during CAS involvement; · Assist Counsel in the preparation of contested applications before the Court; · Other duties include completing general administrative tasks such as maintaining court files, preparing correspondence and court orders, arranging for process service, distributing mail, faxing, photocopying documents and ordering supplies, as required. Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Requirements: · Law Clerk Diploma, or B.A. Degree in Law; · Two years’ related experience in a Legal Office is required; · Knowledge of CFSA, Family Court Rules and procedures, highly desired; · Knowledge of court rules and procedures; · Proven ability in using computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, AS400 and Westlaw); · Excellent English communication skills (both verbally and in writing) with client, staff and community professionals; · Valid Driver’s license and access or ownership to a vehicle is required; · Ability to work in a fast paced environment with daily deadlines; and · Good judgment, excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently, with the possibility of working some overtime hours; · Bilingualism would be considered an asset. We offer a salary range of $42,636 to $52,289 plus an additional 6% of the base rate in lieu of insurable benefits.
