LAW & ORDER: THE FLORIDA FUGITIVE Yesterday… The first - TopicsExpress

LAW & ORDER: THE FLORIDA FUGITIVE Yesterday… The first round of teargas was a dud. The deputy, in full SWAT team armor swore under his breath, glanced at the team leader and shrugged. Without needing to be told, he loaded another round, aimed and squeezed the trigger. Bam! The sounds of shattered glass echoed; suddenly, misty gray smoke began to filter out the second story window. The dozen members of the joint Island County Sheriff’s Office and Oak Harbor Police Department Emergency Response Team instinctively tightened the straps on their gas masks. Michael watched with binoculars from a rise, about 100 yards away along with members of the Washington State Department of Corrections and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Michael was in command of the entire operation. Michael has been working long hours. Over the summer, on North Whidbey Island, near the Navel Air Station, there had been a series of drive-by shootings, no one has been hurt, but several cars shot up. Interestingly, many or the victims in these incidents had ties to local drug dealers…Go figure! Anyway, the recent shootings culminating in a home-invasion robbery where a living room couch ended up taking several rounds…Again some drug connections. About a week ago, Michael and his detectives were able to develop several likely suspects. Then, an informant provided some key information. He related that a 19-year-old gang member from Florida had recently relocated to Whidbey Island, supposedly to stay with his father, but was the epicenter of the crime wave. Michael works on many cases simultaneously. He had not mentioned this one. However when he came home from work Tuesday night, after already putting in 50 hours since Saturday, he apologized and said he had to leave early. He had located a location where the 19 year old was hiding. Further, Florida had issued a Violent Offender Fugitive Warrant. It seems that among other things, this young fellow wanted for a series of armed car jacking’s in the Sunshine State. “Briefing at 8am,” Michael intoned as he gathered his equipment at 6am yesterday morning. “With luck, I should be home for lunch.” I have heard that before… Michael trudged in exhausted at 4pm, though smiling. “We got him!” He beamed. “We had to evacuate the entire building, use gas and eventually send the SWAT team in to breach the door…but we got him!” That followed by another satisfied grin… “I Love my job!” As much as I would Love Michael to retire, he enjoys what he does and helps people every day. Have a Wonderful Friday! October 16, 2014
