LAZARUS BURIAL, from NOTES FROM ANTIQUITY (NEW TESTAMENT IN ANTIQUITY, A SURVEY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT WITHIN ITS CULTURAL CONTEXTS). The death, burial, and resurrection of Lazarus in John 11 are an ironic foreshadowing of Jesus passion in the Fourth Gospel. In Jewish custom, a person was usually buried on the day he died. The body was washed, perfumed, and wrapped, and mourning continued for one week. Visitors visited the tomb to pray and recite Scripture. Emotion was public in this culture, so wailing was loud an raucous. Many believed that the spirit of the person left the body and they would be unrecognizable. This explains Marthas grief in John 11:39. Four days have passed for Lazarus and all hope is lost. Jesus power, however, can overcome even this obstacle. This also explains Jesus burial for three days. The women are distraught because if Jesus Body cannot be found immediately, He may not be recognizable. Jesus return before Monday puts their concerns to rest. Really good food for thought! AMEN!
