Khem Veasna, the president of the League for Democracy Party (LDP) said on Monday June 17, 2013 that three out of the eight points in the policies of his party are not only able to handle the education issues in Cambodia, but can also increase the quality of education in the country Mr. Khem Veasma was invited to speak during the one hour radio talk-show Social Mirror “We Demand” at Radio Sarika FM 105.50 MHz with the topic “LDPs Policy for Improving the Quality of Cambodia’s Education”. TheLDP is known as a party that has a vision of reducing the power of the state and the empowerment of citizens, and seeks to find the cause of these problems. Upon joining the election campaign, the LDP had an eight point policy in regards to correcting education issues in Cambodia. Mr. Khem Veasna affirmed that the poor education system in Cambodia is hindering its development. The current study curriculum of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) is not providing the critical thinking necessary for students to succeed in the future. Furthermore, teachers who follow this curriculum are teaching redundant theories to students which end up lacking the necessary skills to be qualified in the workplace. He also added that raising awareness of life skills and morality for students also increases qualified human resources for strengthening the development of our country. Mr. Khem Veasna added that mechanisms related to the policies of the LDP focus on increasing knowledge, life skills and morality to of Cambodian people. Additionally, by strengthening the quality of education, the income of citizens will be expected to prosper. Based on LDP policy, Mr. Khem Veasna strongly emphasizes the importance in which the media and education system have on increasing human resources and development in Cambodia. Furthermore, Mr. Khem Veasna added that in order to improve the quality of education, the Royal Government must first increase the national budget for supporting the education system as well as recruiting young people with a rich education background or people who have high potential to be teachers. Also, any corruption in education should be prevented. Mr. So Sarin, the club leader of Cambodian Youth for Social Development (CYSD), also another guest speaker for this talk-show said that on behalf of Cambodian youth, he is very eager to achieve this level of qualified education. Mr. Sarin added that it the current education standard in Cambodia is a big obstacle of for the development of the country, so the Royal Government should deal with issues in education to increase its quality immediately. He suggested that the political parties – especially the winning party – need to follow up what they promised with corresponding actions. At the end of the show, Mr. Veasna assured listeners that he will take responsibility for following through on the solutions in which the LDP had promised for fixing the education in Cambodia. He concluded that the LDP will provide to the community what he believes to be two important factors in education to Cambodian youth – teaching analytical and critical thinking, and educating students in the areas of morality, especially when participating in social work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ kindcambodia.org/2013/06/ldps-policy-for-improving-the-quality-of-cambodias-education-2/
