LEADERSHIP PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS FOR A SITUTIONAL LEADER Leadership requires the solving of variety of problems. These problems cannot be ignored, and must be handled promptly in the most effective manner possible. Delay or inability to solve these problems can adversely affect the efficiency of a organization. Each leadership problem needs to be analyzed and evaluated on its own merits, giving due consideration to prevalent environments. We are all faced with problems to solve in our workday. The problem for most people is that they do not use one process to solve problems and issues or to make decisions. Another problem is that people are not consistent in how they solve problems. They do not find something that works and then do it the same way over and over to be successful. An organization needs to define some standard of problem solving, so that leadership can effectively direct others in the research and resolution of issues. In Military field, Commanders use different Appreciations viz Tactical, Intelligence, Administrative, etc to solve the problems (mission) in a methodical way. Whereas in Business World there is a Business Plan of Manufacturing / Service Organizations to deal with a problems (e.g. how to make an organization more profitable / growing) and in a Technical field of Project Management there are different Flow Charts to deal with numerous / varied problems. Solving Problems and Making Decisions following are the Basic Common / Possible Steps:- 1. Identify the Problems. 2. Analysis the Problem. 3. Develop the Solutions (alternatives / options) and analyzing the solutions (courses available and best / common course). 4. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of solutions (alternatives / options), including potential risks and benefits and short- and long-term consequences. 5. Implement / selecting the best Solution (course / option / alternative) that is most appropriate to goal, context, and available resources. 6. Establish criteria for evaluating effectiveness of solution or decision. Or 7. Planning the next course of action (plan b) 1. Identify the Problem ~ A. Select the Problem to be analyzed. B. Clearly Define the Problem and Established a Precise Problem Statement. C. Set a Measureable Goal for the Problem Solving Effort. D. Establish a Process for coordinating with and gaining approval of leadership. 2. Analyze the Problem ~ (Appreciation / Diagnose the Situation - so that focus is on the problem, not just its symptoms). A. Identify the processes that impact the problem, select one and write down. B. List the steps in the process as it currently exists. C. Map (flow chart / logical sequence) the Process. D. Validate the map of the process. E. Identify potential / root cause of the problem. F. Collect and analyze data related to the problem. G. Verify or revise the original problem statement 3. Develop the Solutions ~ A. Establish criteria for selecting a solution. B. Generate potential solutions that will address the root causes of the problem. C. Select a solution. D. Gain approval and supporter the chosen solution. E. Plan the solution. 4. Implement a Solution ~ A. Implement the chosen solution on a trial or pilot basis 5. Evaluate the Results ~ A. Gather data on the solution. B. Analyze the data on the solution. C. Achieve the desired results? o If YES, go to next Step. o If NO, go back to Step 1. 6. Standardize the Solution (and Capitalize on New Opportunities) ~ A. Identify systemic changes and training needs for full implementation. B. Adopt the solution. C. Plan ongoing monitoring of the solution. D. Continue to look for incremental improvements to refine the solution. E. Look for another improvement opportunity.
