LEARN THE STORIES OF OUR ANCESTORS AND CREATE YOUR OWN AT THE FREE STORYTELLERS FESTIVAL SUNDAY, JULY 21 AT THE DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM DETROIT – Whether the history of this great city intrigues you or the art of storytelling is a talent you want to obtain, the Detroit Historical Society hosts their first Storytellers Festival on Sunday, July 21 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum. An ideal event for families looking to explore the multiple layers of stories that make up Detroit, the Storytellers Festival is a free event that includes workshops and craft activities like making bookmarks and creating illustrations. Satori Shakoor, creator of The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers and writer, actor, and award-winning performer, is leading a storytelling workshop from noon to 1 p.m. Representing metro Detroit’s ethnic communities, several community organizations are hosting booth spaces where they will trace their history in the region, presenting information about when the first of their group arrived here, why they undertook the journey, where they lived, and what kind of work they found. These organizations include the French-Canadian Heritage Society, the Arab American National Museum, the Society’s Black Historic Sites Committee, the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers, and the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan. Also, Detroit’s Mexicantown author Maria Elena Rodriguez is slated to share stories, and the dance group Raices Mexicanas is scheduled to perform representing our Mexican community. This program is funded in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Permanent exhibits include the famous Streets of Old Detroit, the Allesee Gallery of Culture, Kid Rock Music Lab, Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad, Detroit: The “Arsenal of Democracy,” Frontiers to Factories, America’s Motor City, and The Glancy Trains.
